Visit Butts Hill Fort


The Fort is one of the public parks in Portsmouth, Rhode Island

Location:

Butts Hill Fort is located adjacent to Portsmouth High School. Fort gate is situated on Butts Street, off Sprague Street. No parking is allowed on Butts Street and visitors are asked to park along Dyer Street or at Portsmouth High School.

Butts Hill Fort is the largest Revolutionary War earthwork still standing in southern New England. It served as the headquarters for General John Sullivan during the Rhode Island Campaign in 1778 and was occupied and enlarged by allied French troops under Comte de Rochambeau during 1780-1781. It is on the National Register of Historic Places and on the National Park Service’s Washington-Rochambeau Revolutionary Route National Historic Trail. 

What You Can See and Do at the Fort

Butts Hill Fort offers a panoramic view of Narragansett Bay from the highest vantage point on Aquidneck Island and features walking trails for visitors to stroll through the historic earthworks.
